How Many Words Per Page? A Word Count Guide

"How many words is that?" comes up constantly for essays, articles, speeches, and posts. This guide gives you quick reference tables for pages, reading time, and common limits, and explains where the familiar numbers came from so you know when to trust them. Words per page

The number of words on a page depends on font, size, spacing, and margins. Using a standard 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins, these are the common estimates:

Where 250 and 500 came from

Those two numbers are older than word processors. A typewriter using pica type set ten characters to the inch, which gave 65 characters across a 6.5-inch line of text, and a letter-size page double-spaced held 25 such lines. At an average of six characters per word including the space after it, that works out to almost exactly 250 words. Publishers and editors built their whole economy on that page, and manuscript pages are still counted at roughly 250 words each today.

Single spacing doubles the lines on the page and therefore doubles the count, which is where 500 comes from. Neither number is a rule, and neither will match your document exactly. They survive because they are close enough to be useful and simple enough to remember, which is the same reason 250 words per page remains the unit publishers use to estimate a book's length before it is typeset.

How font choice changes the count

Fonts differ in how much horizontal space each letter takes, so the same page holds meaningfully different amounts of text. These are approximate figures for a double-spaced letter-size page with 1-inch margins:

The spread is larger than most people expect. A 3,000-word paper is about 12 pages in Times New Roman and about 15 in Verdana, which is why an instructor who cares about length will specify the font. Courier is the outlier by design: it is monospaced, so every character occupies the same width, and standard manuscript format uses it precisely because it makes pages predictable rather than compact.

Margins, and the rest of the fine print

Margins matter almost as much as font. Moving from 1-inch to 1.5-inch margins on all four sides removes roughly a quarter of the text area, so a 250-word page becomes closer to 190. Other things that quietly change the number:

• Paragraph spacing. Modern word processors add space after each paragraph by default. A page with eight short paragraphs loses several lines to that spacing alone.
• Headings and subheadings. Each one costs a line above and below plus its own line, so a heavily sectioned document runs longer in pages than the word count suggests.
• Block quotes and lists. Indented material has shorter lines, so it fills more page per word.
• Paper size. A4 is slightly taller and narrower than US Letter, which usually nets out to a line or two more per page.
• Widows and orphans control. Turning it on pushes stray lines to the next page, which can add a page across a long document.

Because of all this, the honest way to answer "how many pages is my essay" is to write it and look. Page estimates are for planning; the document is the authority.

Handwritten pages

Handwriting fills a page far faster than type, and the number depends almost entirely on how large you write. On standard college-ruled paper, most adults fit somewhere between 100 and 200 words on a side, with 150 a reasonable planning figure. Wide-ruled paper and larger handwriting drop that toward 100. If an assignment is set in handwritten pages, expect roughly one typed double-spaced page to equal one and a half to two handwritten sides.

Reading and speaking time

Silent reading averages roughly 225-240 words per minute for adult readers (a 2019 meta-analysis of nearly 200 reading studies puts the average near 238; this site uses a round 225). Reading aloud or presenting is slower: speech coaches commonly recommend 120-150 words per minute, and this site uses 130. Handy when you're timing a speech or estimating how long an article will take.

Both figures are averages over general prose. Technical material with equations or tables reads far slower, and a presenter who pauses for emphasis or takes questions will run past the speaking estimate. Common word and character limits

Many places cap your length. A few you'll run into often:

Why two tools give different word counts

Paste the same paragraph into three different counters and you can get three different numbers. None of them is broken; they are applying different rules, and knowing the rules explains every disagreement you will ever see.

• Hyphenated compounds. Most counters, including this one and Microsoft Word, treat state-of-the-art as one word because there are no spaces in it. A few tools split on hyphens and count four.
• Numbers and dates. 1,500 is one word. 1 500 is two. 12/05/2026 is one.
• Headings, captions, footnotes, and text boxes. Word processors count everything in the document by default. If your limit excludes footnotes, the status bar is not your friend; copy just the body text into a counter instead.
• Standalone symbols. An ampersand or an em dash surrounded by spaces counts as a word in whitespace-based counters and is skipped by counters that require a letter or digit.
• Tracked changes. Word counts the visible state of the document, so leaving changes displayed rather than accepted can inflate the number.

For ordinary prose the difference between tools is under one percent, which almost never matters. It starts to matter when you are within a handful of words of a hard limit, and the rule then is simple: the count that decides is the one produced by whoever is enforcing the limit.

Novels and manuscripts

Fiction runs on different conventions than essays. In standard manuscript format (double-spaced 12pt Courier or Times), a page holds roughly 250-300 words, and publishers think in word counts, not pages: most adult novels land between 70,000 and 100,000 words, which prints to somewhere around 280-400 book pages depending on trim size and typesetting.
